OPENCities Faces - touring photography exhibition

How have the photographers been recruited?

Eight photographers – rising stars in their own cities – were recruited to examine the idea of ‘openness’ in their cities. The British Council has commissioned UK photographer Len Grant – a specialist in regeneration and urban issues – to curate the photography project. In each of the participating cities he invited local gallery curators, university lecturers, magazine editors and other industry professionals to recommend ‘emerging’ photographers who might be suitable for such an engaging commission. The candidates were interviewed and the chosen photographer commissioned to begin work on this exciting project.

The photographers came together in the UK for workshops where they learnt more about the OPENCities project, shared ideas and developed project plans for their contribution to the exhibition.

Working closely with the city councils and British Council in their own cities each of the photographers have produced work related to the themes investigated in the wider research.

For each participating city a photographer was commissioned to portray the lives and personal stories of a number of people who have made another city their home.
